Nearly 1.3 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

One in two men and one in three women, or approximately 120 million Americans, will develop cancer over their lifetime.

One of every four deaths in America is caused by cancer. It is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., exceeded only by heart disease.

Since 1990, approximately 15 million new cancer cases have been diagnosed.

More than 1,500 people die of cancer per day - about one person every 56 seconds.

Nearly 5 million lives have been lost to cancer since 1990.

The National Institutes of Health estimates overall costs for cancer in 2000 at $180.2 billion.

Our government currently invests only $3.2 billion to find cures, treatments and prevention strategies for cancer. Of these funds,   only 2% are invested in research and development. This amounts to $12.03 per year per person.

8,900,000 people are alive today as a result of progress in cancer research.

Over the past 30 years, the five year cancer survival rate has risen from 38% to 60% according to the National Coalition for Cancer Research.

In most every case . . . this will be TRUE.

I've conducted my own personal study on MOTIVATING players with regards to raising funds.  When you, as the coach, create an ENTHUSIASM, a sense of COMPETITION, you can really move your players to incredible results.  We are providing YOU an opportunity to be a "facilitator" to create an outstanding fund raising opportunity for your program.

We had our players sell subs, sell pizzas, sell candy, even this very Shoot-A-Thon with nothing behind it to create a "sense of competition".  Our motivation was simply - we need money for shoes, warm-ups, a Shoot Away, or whatever!  To the players, it was "here we go again".  One year, I cut a deal with the NIKE Distributor we got our Team Shoes from and worked it out to get a nice set of NIKE sweats, tops and bottoms.  All I did was create a sense of competition and the Top Fundraiser would get 'the gear'.   They went NUTS.  Great athletes LOVE COMPETITION!   We made more money that year selling subs, or hoagies,  than ever in the past because of the competition created over NIKE apparel.

Think about it for a second.  When you are teaching skills, break-down drills during practice and those skills are built into small competitions between your players, that is when the work-ethic on the court is at an ALL TIME HIGH.  Same goes here.

I'm convinced that you can be the "FACILITATOR" to make your team bring in more money for your team (67%) by participating in this Fundraiser than if you were to conduct a Shoot-A-Thon on your own (100%) just simply to raise money AGAIN.  The players incentives, YOUR INCENTIVES, and this opportunity for you to heighten the awareness of cancer facts to the youth or our society, while teaching them how to pull together and FIGHT FOR A CAUSE, will give your team even more profitability by participating in this Fundraiser.

Everyone WINS!   Your team, and you as the coach, now have your community more readilly embracing your team because of your involvement in the fight against Cancer.  It's not just about YOU and YOUR TEAM.   I'm certain, your involvement in this Fundraiser will gain you support in your community year in and year out.  You'll be teaching your players SO MUCH MORE than just this great game of basketball.

It's obvious, the benefits extend beyond getting great basketball offenses, defenses, concepts and philosophies to help your team win more games.  So create that ENTHUSIASM, that "sense of competition", with your players in having them understand the WIN-WIN at hand.   Cancer is one of our society's greatest causes and Coach Jimmy Valvano makes it basketball-related.  The parents of all of your players very well may remember Coach "V" and how could your community not support your team while knowing that their contributions not only help your basketball program, but the fight against cancer as well, in the name of:
