| CHAPTER 4: Set Plays vs. Zone Defenses
Below is a list of all of the
plays in CHAPTER 4. I've already defined my opinion of the 'Best' of
the Best for you to review first since there are so many effective sets included in
the complete set. You will find a short description of each play below with a link taking
you to an example of a play looking much like the quality of what you will receive with
your order. Remember, just about every set play has multiple
options, which makes them so diffcult to defend. These plays were designed to make
opponents pay for playing good defense. I can't emphasize the importance of good sharp
execution including everything from timing, floor spacing, good solid picks, mis-directing
and v-cutting off of those picks, crisp passes, to receiving the passing ready to pull the
trigger for the uncontested shot. Review the descriptions below and look at the link NOW to see a sample play. |

NOW |
NOW
is a quick hitting play against just about any zone defense. You players who set
picks simply have to make a couple easy reads. You'll almost always find yourself
with an easy lay up. Click on the link to see for yourself. |
Texas
|
TEXAS is
arguably our best set against zone defenses. There are so many options and lots of
movement, picks against responsibilities, sealing off, and seam cutting. Go to this
play first when you look at CHAPTER 4 when you receive the materials and you'll find this
as one of your "go-to" plays when teams throw zones at you. |
USC
|
USC (Use Short Corner) is a great zone offense which almost can be
considered a motion of sorts. Each step-by-step frame shows you how to exploit the
short corner or the extended low post which is one of the best spots to get the ball
against any zone. From there we have cutters and set picks to flash people open in
the seams and always have multiple options to exploit the zone. This is one that
extends the zone from side line to side line getting the ball to the short corner
attacking the zone from there on both sides of the court. |
Swing
|
SWING
is a great scoring opportunity with a taste of deception. This set will give your
small forward a great opportunity coming off of a pick for a short bank shot. If
that option isn't there, then multiple options have many seams hit by cutters precisely
where the defense left to help get to the small forward coming off of a pick.
Another great set with multiple options. |
Jo-Ball
|
JO-BALL is
another great set against any zone. Again, this is a perfect example of how we make
defenses pay for playing good defense. Our ball movement dictates where the defense
is going to be in all of our sets. We create the floor by design and then we sets
some picks for an easy entry. This play will result in a lay-up almost
always. |
Valley |
VALLEY is a great lob against any zone defense. As coaches always do
- you'll be concentrating on weaknesses of your opponents in pre-game scouting and
certainly during the coarse of the game. Once you have this play included in your
arsenal, you'll be able to see almost instantly how teams play their zone defenses if
VALLEY is there. Any opponent's zone who has a player not understanding their weak
side of the court responsibilities, the play will work. We've had countless dunks
and lay-ups over the years just simly taking advantage of a weak link in a defense. You
don't even need a weak defensive team for this play to work, all you need is a weak link.

Roe-Rob
|
ROE-ROB
is a play set up for our point guard. If you have an athletic point guard who can
elevate, catch and shoot off of a lob pass this play will not only work for an easy two
points, but it will set up one of the most exciting plays many have ever seen in
basketball in PSYCHE. (See below) |
Psyche
|
PSYCHE
is one of the best designed plays I've ever created. It is set up by the play
above...ROE-ROB. The play is ran from the opposite side of the court as ROE-ROB.
You've got to order CHAPTER 4 to see how this play works. The middle
separates like the Red Sea as we again, lob to our point guard off of a pick on the
back or weak side of the zone responsibility. We lob of to the side of the
back board to our point guard and our power forward (4) -or- center (5) turns and takes
off down the lane right in front of the basket. Our point guard catches, as the
defense collapses to recover and instead of shooting, he lobs right in front of the rim
for a thunderous dunk. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? It is truly a
masterpiece and it is always one of our players favorites. Coach Dave Wojcik,
then Assistant Coach at Loyola College (Md) said "PYSHCE is one of the
best plays he has ever seen in basketball, ever!" |
