CHAPTER 5:

Set Plays vs. GIMMICK Defenses

Below is a list of all of the plays in CHAPTER 5. I've already defined my opinion of the 'Best' of the Best for you to review first since there are so many effective sets included in the complete set. You will find a short description of each play below with a link taking you to an example of a play looking much like the quality of what you will receive with your order. Remember, just about every set play has multiple options, which makes them so difficult to defend. These plays were designed to make opponents pay for playing good defense. I can't emphasize the importance of good sharp execution including everything from timing, floor spacing, good solid picks, mis-directing and v-cutting off of those picks, crisp passes, to receiving the passing ready to pull the trigger for the uncontested shot. Review the descriptions below and look at the link Now or Shandu to see a sample play.

TEN

TEN was named for its number of options against either a Triangle-and-Two or a Box-and-One.   It's success is predicated upon picks from those players being defended in a man-to-man setting picks on the defenders sitting in zone responsibilities which frees up their teammates in enormous seams in the defense.  The reciprocal is true with 10 options where in return those players being GIMMICK'ed get picks at the time when the floor is perfectly spaced for them to pop off a  pick for an open look.   Although a little complicated, TEN is truly a masterpiece of design.

Norwin (Low)

NORWIN (Low) is a tremendous set against a triangle-and-two.  You'll create floor spacing and picks will be set to free up your offense players being gimmicked which will force the defenders in a triangle to commit to your offense players.   Your swing man (3) on the weak side of the court will have to make some fundamental reads depending on how the defenders in the triangle respond to the ball.

Norwin (High)

NORWIN (High) is another great set against a triangle-and-two which we really extend the defense from sideline to sideline.   By skipping the ball to the weak side of the floor with both of our players being gimmicked now away from the ball.  We almost force a man-to-man.   As soon as we pick the triangle must react.  If we don't get an entry pass, patience pays off because a back pick and lob is there as a secondary option.  Another GREAT set against a triangle-and-two.

Peak (adjustments)

PEAK is another great play for a triangle-and-two.  This also extends the defense from sideline to sideline which is key to breaking down the triangle.   A quick ball reversal, good dribble penetration to a trap area creates a seam for a timely pick and roll to the middle and low post of the ball side.

Shuffle

SHUFFLE is a for sure offense to run against a triangle-and-two which requires patience if you happy with settling for an elbow jump shot.  If the elbow jump shot isn't available for the non-gimmicked offensive players, then a dump down to the block MUST be open.    This is really a motion offense adapted to exploit a triangle.

Valley

VALLEY is a great set to run against a box-and-one.  Ball reversal and an excited post player wanting the ball in the middle post will clear out the baseline for a back pick and a lob.   You'll find sometimes teams will try to steal the momentum of the game by jumping into a box-and-one, this play will defeat their goal of stealing the momentum and VALLEY will get your fans more and more into the game.  Can you say "time-out" for your opposing coach?

"31"

"31" is another variation of one of our motion offenses which creates a great opportunity for a post player.  After extending the defense from one sideline to the other we'll create a seal off and entry pass for your strongest post player.

Texas (adjustments)

TEXAS, one of our best sets against a zone is adjusted to created an entry pass either to the middle post or low post to either our (4) or (5) and then our shooting guard has to make a read  on how the defense reacts to the open area to receive a pass for an open jumper or lay-up.
